The President of the Republic of Albania, Bamir Topi, yesterday decorated poet, writer and translator Nikos Katsalidas, who originates from Agioi Saranda, with the “Grand Master” medal.
This distinction for Nikos Katsalidas is an example of his contribution to Greek and Albanian letters, since he is considered one of the few Greek minority poets, able to write his poems with the same degree of fluency in both languages.
In Albania he is known as one of the most distinguished and at the same time prolific men of the Letters, while he was given an honorary mention in the recently published Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Albanian Academy of Sciences for his work.
Nikos Katsalidas’ diverse work is comprised of thirty poetry collections, one novel and a collection of short stories, in addition to multiple translations, with his translation of Greek Nobel prize winning poet Odysseas Elytis in Albania holding a special place. For this translation he was honored with the “Silver Pen” award by the Albanian Ministry of Culture.
During 2000-2001 he was Minister to the Prime Minister on Human Rights and Minority issues, while for many years he served as cultural attaché at the Embassy of Albania in Athens.
