Under the interstate cooperation agreement, signed on February 7 in Brussels, by the Greek Deputy Minister of Education, Evi Christofilopoulou and the Belgian Minister of Education of the French-speaking community, Marie-Dominique Simonet, Greek language courses will be integrated in the curriculum of schools in Belgium.

Through this agreement Greek students, but also students of other ethnicities residing in Belgium, will be able to take Modern Greek or Greek Culture courses, which will be taught up to three hours per week. The program has a 5-year span (2012-2017), leading to the Certificate of Attainment in Greek.

Apart from Greek Language, students also have the opportunity to be taught “Cultural Elements”, involving language and historical data that students are able to work with, individually or in team projects. This area will be mainly utilizing electronic material, making the approach on the elements of culture more attractive, as well as experiential teaching methods.

The signing of the Charter confirms the readiness of the Ministry of Education to support and strengthen the teaching of Greek language abroad, as stated in a notice issued by the Ministry of Education.

The initiative is part of the “Language and Cultures of Origin” program.
