“The Barbarians”, an opera based on Cavafy’s poem “Waiting for the Barbarians”, by Greek – Australian director Constantine Koukas, which was presented at the 2012 MONA FOMA festival in Tasmania, received praising reviews.

The opera was performed in modern Greek with bilingual narration, while principal roles were performed by Athanasia Houndalas, Christos Linou, Nicholas Dinopoulos, Ayton Rose and Grace Ovens, with the participation of several musicians and a Greek chorus of ten men.

Constantine Koukias is considered to be one of the most remarkable composers of Australia in the field of opera and musical theater, having won multiple international distinctions.
