Celebrations for the centenary anniversary of the liberation of Thessaloniki will be launched on January 1st 2012, with a large bonfire at Ano Poli area. The fire, which will burn throughout the year, conveying the message that “the city is taking steps forward”, will be lit by Mayor, Giannis Boutaris.
“Thessaloniki is an entirely unknown city to the world. We must have a rapid and intensive result, with events that will remain as legacy to the future. Allocated funds, besides serving as a reminder of the 100 years of freedom, should make the city more famous abroad and attract citizens”, stated Mr. Boutaris at a Press Conference.
Moreover, during the Press Conference, the logo for the centenary celebrations was presented under the motto “Thessaloniki 1912 – 2012. We celebrate, we participate, we look Forward”, while it was announced that the municipality has secured a 2.4 million Euro amount in its budget to cover the expenses for the celebrations over the year.
According to the schedule, over the first four months of the years, the citizens of Thessaloniki will be asked to contribute in improving the city’s image, and events will be culminated in spring and summer.
Among other things, an international scientific conference has been scheduled for October, whereby scientists will discuss events that took place over the 100 years of freedom in Thessaloniki, and an exhibition on the city’s history hosted at Thessaloniki port. In addition, an international symposium will be held whereby leading scientists will discuss important issues of our planet.
