Nearly 20,000 Viewers Watch Cyprus Documentary on MPT

WASHINGTON, DC — Maryland Public Television aired the one-hour documentary, “Cyprus Still Divided: A U.S. Foreign Policy Failure,” on Mon., Oct. 17, 2011, 10 p.m., to a viewership of 13,000 households or approximately 18- to 20,000 individual viewers. It also aired two other times.

“We appreciate Maryland Public Television for airing this important documentary that scrutinizes the United States’ foreign policy perspective of the Cyprus issue,” AHI President Nick Larigakis said. “We also thank the communities of Maryland, Washington, DC and northern Virginia who tuned-in to watch. We strongly urge additional PBS affiliates throughout the country to follow MPT’s example and air the documentary especially as Cyprus has received increased media attention of late.”

“Cyprus Still Divided” finally reveals the web of domestic politics, the realpolitik of Henry Kissinger, and repeated refusal of successive U.S. presidents to demand that the rule of law and fundamental human rights be upheld in Cyprus. For example, the documentary presents a recently declassified 1974 White House memorandum that clearly indicts Secretary of State Kissinger, who wrote, “There is no American reason why the Turks should not have one-third of Cyprus.”

The documentary was produced by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, George Veras and was made possible by the support of the American Hellenic Institute Foundation. It originally aired on Detroit Public Television, September 13, 2010.

Larigakis added that as a result of MPT’s airing the documentary AHI has received an increased volume of inquiries for the DVD. It is available for purchase at $24.95 plus $3.50 for shipping and handling from pr@ahiworld.org.
