‘1st Middle East Friendship Camp’, August 2011, Kalandra-Halkidiki

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the project “Thessaloniki, Cultural Crossroads”, will host the 1st Middle East Friendship Camp in Halkidiki from 10 to 20 August 2011.

68 students from 12 Universities from the Middle East and the Mediterranean (Palestine, Israel, Iraq, Tunisia, Turkey and Spain) will have the opportunity to meet, share ideas and participate in one of the following five workshops: Architecture, Fine Arts, Archaeology, Environmental Sciences and Political Sciences. Each University will be represented by eight students, four of an artistic and four of a scientific background who will be accompanied by one faculty member.

Universities participating are:

  • Iraq: Baghdad University
  • Israel: Haifa University, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University
  • Palestine: Bethlehem University, Al Quds University
  • Spain: Murcia University
  • Tunisia: University of Gafsa, University of Sfax, University of
  • Tunis, University of Sousse
  • Turkey: Hacettepe University

Additionally, participants will have the chance to attend cultural activities and go on a one-day excursion to Vergina’s archaeological site and a one-day cruise around Mount Athos.

Vice Dean of Aristotle University, Mr. Pantis, states to ANAMPA that the goal is to establish the camp through the “Cultural Crossroads” program, while on students’ first impressions he described a characteristic moment from yesterday’s arrival: “Its not just that they came for the first time in Greece, but that some of them witnessed the sea for the very first time. And so, put their things down and quickly rushed to see how it looks up close, testing the water with their feet”.
