Ivan Savvidi re-elected President of the Federation of Greek Communities in Russia (AGOOR)

Member of the Russian Duma, Coordinator of the Parliamentary Committee for relations with Greece, Ivan Savvidi, was re-elected for the third consecutive time, president of the Federation of Greek Communities in Russia (AGOOR).

The decision was taken on the regular Federation meeting, which took place on July 9th in Rostov. 82 representatives from 41 Greek Associations in Russia elected the new 21-member Administrative Council of the Federation. 15 new associations and Greek communities were entered in the Federation, among which being Norilsk Community (North Pole).

In summarizing the results of the 2007 – 2011 period, Ivan Savvidi stated “The past years haven’t been easy, but ample in events that played a significant role in further developing the Greek movement in Russia. Progress has been made, while the Federation’s reliability is increasing, and we now operate at a new level”.

Referring to the economic crisis in Greece, Mr. Savvidi stressed in his speech, that Greeks in Russia cannot stay indifferent to the problems of their historical homeland. He also stated “May Greece become a country, a nation for all Greeks worldwide”, that can count on the strong support of the Greek Diaspora.

The basic axes of the Federation for the 2011 – 2015 period, as determined at the Conference, focus on regaining historical memory, the revival of spiritual values, the promotion of Greek education, cultural and educational activities, the development of social assistance and support, and the strengthening of AGOOR’s role in the international scene.
