Intensive preparations continue for the Oceania Panhellenic Games to be held in Darwin from September 29th until October 2nd 2011. Over five hundred Greek youths from Australia and New Zealand will be participating in the Games, which take place every two years.
Last week, SAE Oceania and Far East Coordinator, Mr. George Angelopoulos, in cooperation with the President of the Panhellenic Games Organizing Committee, Mr. Yannis Nikolakis and the person in charge of the organization, Mr. Nikos Poniris, made a series of contacts for the organization of the Oceania Panhellenic Games. A review of the organizational effort so far was performed to inform athletes and the Greek Diaspora.
A series of issues related to youth and the games, but also the audience and service programs, were discussed.
SAE Oceania Coordinator, as well as the President, with members of the Steering Committee watched the opening of “Arafura” Games, following an invitation of the Northern Territory Government. “Arafura Games” take place every two years with the participation of thousands of athletes from all Australian states and other countries. The launch of the Games was announced by the General Governor of Australia, Ms Quentin Bryce AC.
Furthermore, in Darwin, on the same week, the 39th Congress of the Federation of Cypriot Communities and Organizations in Australia and New Zealand, as well as the annual PASEKA Conference, were successfully held.
The Congress held in the building of Darwin Cypriot Youth, was attended by High Commissioner Mr. Ioannis Iakovou and the Consul of the Republic of Cyprus in Australia, Mr. Andreas Hadjithemistos. SAE Oceania and Far East was represented by Coordinator, Mr. George Angelopoulos, who also read a message by the President of SAE, Mr. Stefanos P. Tamvakis.
During the congress, a review of the communities’ activities over the past year was made, while perspectives and scheduling of activities of Cypriot organizations was made, as well as youth related issues. The attendants were informed by the High Commissioner and the Consul on Cyprus issue developments and on several issues of the Diaspora, while the Coordinator of SAE, referred to the course of SAE, collaboration with Cypriot Organizations and the Oceania Panhellenic Games.
The Prime Minister of the Northern Territory, Mr. Paul Henderson, held a reception, on the evening of May 6th in honor of the conference attendants and representatives of the Greek community in Darwin.
Before the end of the congress, the attendants unanimously passed resolutions of gratitude towards Australia on its firm position on the Cyprus issue, in addition to a resolution on the support of President Christofias efforts for the solution of the Cyrpus issue, based on UN resolutions.
The Conference concluded with the elections of the Federation of Cypriot Communities in Australia and New Zealand and PASEKA. Mr. Michalis Christodoulou was elected President of the Federation and Mr. Costas Prokopiou was elected President of PASEKA, while the Cypriot Community of Melbourne undertook the organization of the following Congresses.
