The President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), Mr. Stefanos P. Tamvakis expresses his sincere condolences for the unexpected loss of a distinguished member of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad and the Greek Community of Canada, Costas Georganas.

“With Costas Georganas we worked closely since the establishment of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad, sharing common visions and concern for the networking of Greeks abroad. We will always remember him as a humble, tireless worker for the ideals of our homeland and the Greek Diaspora.”

Born on July 16, 1946 in the village of Hirades in the Peloponnese region of Greece, to Nicholaos and Demetra Georganas.

Cos Georganas moved to Canada in 1968. He earned an Honours B.A. in Economics and Finance from York University and later became a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers (F.I.C.B) and a Chartered Director (C. Dir.) – Director’s College (McMaster University and The Conference Board of Canada).

Cos Georganas had a distinguished career of over thirty years with the CIBC during which he held a variety of increasingly senior leadership and management positions with CIBC Corporate and Commercial Banking. These included Vice President & Team Leader of several high performing teams, Vice President Commercial Banking Greater Toronto East and Vice President & Manager North York Corporate Banking Centre. In addition, he held various senior positions in Risk Management, Human Resources Management and Retail Banking with the CIBC group of companies. After his retirement in 2003 Cos Georganas established Hyperion International Inc., a business consulting company.

Cos Georganas was an avid supporter of the Greek Orthodox Church and very active with community and charitable organizations and served in leadership positions and Boards at a national and international level.

His directorship roles, community involvement and offices held include:

Archon Notarios & President – Brotherhood of Archons of Ecumenical Patriarchate in Canada; Director & Corporate Treasurer and member of Executive Committee, Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto and all Canada Director and Chair of “Audit” and “ Compensation & Corporate Governance” Committees; West 49 Inc. when it was a publicly traded company; Secretary-Treasurer and member of Executive Board – World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE); Director & Corporate Treasurer and member of Executive Committee – Hellenicare Inc. a charitable organization, Chicago Ill, USA; Director, Toronto East/Scarborough Chamber of Commerce; Director and Chair of Fundraising Committee, Hellenic Home for the Aged; President, Athens Villa Non-Profit Housing Corp. of Toronto; President, Toronto East/Scarborough Chamber of Commerce; Advisor, Mayor’s Committee on Economic Development, City of Scarborough
