«Plant your roots in Greece» – Tree planting activities in Oreokastro in collaboration with the Greek American Institution

Approximately 2.000 saplings were planted on Saturday in the broader area of Oreokastro in Thessaloniki, with the participation of volunteers from all age groups. It is the initial phase of a larger campaign of the Municipality of Oreokastro, implemented with funding of the Greek – American Institution “Plant your Roots in Greece”. Overall 4.000 trees are expected to be planted by the end of October.

On Saturdays activities, taking place in the Municipal Community of Oreokastro (Asprovrysi area – towards Melissochori), members of the Hunting Association of Ampelokipi, volunteers from the area, town councilors and municipal staff, students and even small children, enthusiastically responded to the message “We are planting our Roots”.

The Sudnay morning shower did not prevent residents from participating in the tree-planting activities at the surrounding area of “Tsoukes” Municipal Theater. Tree planting activities in the S. Philadelphia Community, postponed due to heavy rainfall will take place soon.

“On the occasion of World Forestry Day on March 21st, our municipality organized a tree-planting weekend, as a sign of respect that we must show towards nature”, stated the Deputy Mayor of Green, Theodore Matsoukatidis, thanking all his fellow citizens who attended the activities, the Greek American Institution “Plant Your Roots in Greece” and its President Theodore Spyropoulos.

“We are particularly moved by our collaboration with this Greek – American institution, which shows us how some people, even though they live thousands of kilometres away from their homeland, care for its wellbeing. Lastly, I would like to stress that the tree-planting period will be officially established in our municipality from October, until late March”, mentioned Mr. Matsoukatidis.

The “Plant Your Roots in Greece” Foundation, based in Chicago (U.S.A.) has been active for over 10 years, organizing tree-planting activities in collaboration with local authorities throughout Greece. The philosophy of the foundation is to combine the ancient Greek values of respect towards nature with the Olympic ideal of volunteerism, promoting the spirit of reconciliation and the coexistence of mankind with the environment. Over 350.000 USD have been donated all these years towards tree-planting activities in Greece.
