On Sunday, December 12th 2010, the enthronement ceremony of the newly elected Metropolitan Damaskinos of Johannesburg and Pretoria, took place in an overwhelming atmosphere, in the presence of His Beatitude, the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, Theodoros II, Metropolitans of Nigeria, Alexandros, Sergios of the Cape of Good Hope, Ioakeim of Zambia, Grigorios of Cameroon and Bishops Ioannis of Mozambique, Gabriel of Mariout, the Patriarchal Bishop of Alexandria, government representatives of State Gauteng and leading members of Diaspora organizations.
After the ceremony, SAE Coordinator of S. Africa – M. East Region, Mr. Harris Gouvelis, had the opportunity to meet with His Eminence and Hierarchs of the Throne, who informed him on Hellenism, issues concerning the Greek Diaspora in their countries of responsibility and Church activities and had a discussion on the continuation of the close and effective cooperation between Church, Diplomatic Authorities and the Diaspora, especially in this critical and difficult period for our country.
Lastly, Mr. Gouvelis, expressed once again to His Beatitude, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa Theodoros II, the support on behalf of the World Council of Greeks Abroad and the Hellenic community in SAE Africa – M. East Region towards the Throne of Apostle and Evangelist Markos and the praiseworthy missionary work in the African continent. Furthermore, he welcomed the New Metropolitan of Johannesburg and Pretoria, Damaskinos, wishing him every success and assured him on their cooperation and support in his work.
