Within the framework of the International Tourist Expo held in London, over 500 members of the British Guild of Travel Writers, at a special ceremony held in Savoy hotel in London, awarded the New Acropolis Museum as the Best Worldwide Tourism Project for 2010.
The prize was presented to the Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mr. George Nikitiades, representing the Greek Government. Mr. Nikitiades thanked the organizers and the voting travel writers, noting that this distinction has paved the way towards the return of the Parthenon Marbles.
The Greek Deputy Minister also inaugurated, along with the President of the GNTO, Mr. Nikos Kanellopoulos the Greek stand at the expo, bringing together national tourism organizations from all over the world, as well as other bodies representing the world tourism industry.
Mr. Nikitiades in a Press Conference, mentioned that the strategies employed for the attraction of foreign tourists are changing, advertising will not be general but specific, tailored to the specific characteristics of each country, adding that priority will be given to three new markets; Russia, China and India.
The President of the GNTO Mr. Kanellopoulos underlined that priority is also given to the British market and the key aim towards this direction is to attract quality tourism, through enhancing the infrastructures of Greek tourism at the same time, according to the needs of British tourists. The creation of new golf courses as well as marinas, are part of this strategic plan.
