2010 was one of the most successful years to date for the New York Pancyprian Freedoms football team, since the team was crowned champion in three different championships in the US; the “Cosmopolitan League Champions”, the “NY State Cup Champions” and the “USA National Champions”, where they defeated Detroit Kickers at the finals.
“The Pancyprian has a great history. It started in 1975 as a football team with Greek Diaspora players, aiming to promote Cyprus. At the time we believed that through football and sports it was right to promote the Cyprus issues, due to the fact that football has a multinational character. The day before yesterday we were all moved when we saw the Cypriot flag waving at the highest point of the football ground”, stated, among other things, the President of the Pancyprian, President of the Coordinating Committee “Justice for Cyprus” (PSEKA), Philip Christopher, in an event in Astoria, where the grand victory of the team was celebrated.
The “NY Pancyprian Freedoms” have won five Cosmopolitan championships (1978-79, 1979-80, 1981-82, 2002-03, 2003-04) and over the years, have been one of the more consistent teams in their league.
