The SAE former USSR countries Region honored the memory of the 353,000 innocent victims of the Pontian Greek Genocide with an emotional visit to the heart of historical Pontos, the Panagia Soumela Monastery in Trabzon.
Headed by SAE Regional Coordinator and Russian Duma MP Ivan Savvidis, a delegation made up of 20 presidents of Greek communities in former USSR countries, Pan-Hellenic Federation of Pontian Associations President Charalambos Apostolidis and General Secretary Christina Sachinidou, visited Trabzon today and held a memorial service in the Monastery of Panagia Soumela.
“We demand the recognition of historical truth, the return of our Monasteries and Churches for religious use. This is the minimum duty and obligation toward our ancestors who lived eternally in the Holy Land of Pontos,” Savvidis stressed in his address.
The delegation visited the Aghia Sophia Church in Trabzon and immediately afterwards departed for Thessaloniki to participate in the rally organized in the city.
This is the first time such an event is held in Pontos on May 19, the Pontian Greek Genocide Memorial Day, and it was made possible thanks to the moves and support of Ivan Savvidis, who chartered a plane for this purpose.
