Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece received SAE former Soviet Union countries Regional Coordinator and Russian Duma deputy Ivan Savvidis at the Archdiocese in Athens. Savvidis was accompanied by his counterpart Greece-Russia Cooperation Parliamentary Committee President MP Simos Kedikoglou.
During the very useful meeting, as it was described by both sides, Savvidis had the opportunity to brief the Archbishop on the efforts made by the Regional Coordinating Council to regenerate and support Hellenism and Orthodoxy in the former Soviet Union countries. “Hellenism and Orthodoxy are identical,” he stressed and invited the Archbishop to visit the Region. Savvidis thanked the Archbishop for the Archdiocese support to the Region referring to the hundreds of children from Russia hosted in its camping facilities. He also referred to the need for unity within Orthodoxy to serve as a mound against the heresies that plague modern world.
Archbishop Ieronymos after thanking Savvidis for the work done by the Coordinating Council, referred to the efforts made to support the Omogeneia and stated that the hospitality programmes for children will be held again this year. Referring to the unity of Orthodox Christians he commented that it is a mistake to bring ethnic differences and claims to the Church, stressing the Ecumenical role of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. The Archbishop would have gladly accepted a formal invitation to visit Hellenism in south Russia.
