Conference of Greek Communities in Germany ends Düsseldorf03.03.2009

The Conference of the Greek Communities in Germany attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Theodoros Kassimis, responsible for Greeks abroad, was completed in Dusseldorf. The representatives of the Greek communities outlined their concerns for the future of the Omogeneia and exchanged views with the deputy FM on the Federation of Greek Communities of Germany (OEK) action plan.

Kassimis stressed that the top priority for the Greek State is the Greek-speaking education as well as actions aimed at renewing the structures of the communities to become more attractive to 2nd and 3rd generation Greeks while assuming a greater role in the German society.

Kassimis briefed the Greek expatriates on the draft law for the voting rights of the Greeks abroad, currently under discussion in parliament, characterizing it as a great opportunity and a history-making initiative on behalf of Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis. He also called on the Greek expatriates to go to the polls and vote in June’s European Parliament elections.

On his part, OEK President Costas Dimitriou thanked the Greek State for its support to the communities and underlined that the Greek language and culture have to be preserved through well-targeted actions by OEK and the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad.
