The Youth Network of SAE Oceania & Far East Region held its founding convention in Sydney with the participation of 100 young Greek expatriates, from all Australian states and New Zealand, aged 18 to 30.

SAE Oceania & Far East Regional Coordinator George Angelopoulos stressed that the Youth Network is a first step toward the representation of young expatriates in SAE and their more active participation in the Greek-Australian community.

General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad alternate general director Charis Hatzicharalambous, who represented the Greek State, addressed the members of the state Youth Councils of SAE inviting them to leave the past and make a new start. He also conveyed to them a message by Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis.

Present in the convention were Deputy Foreign Minister Theodoros Kassimis’ political office director Anna Vasiliadou, senior Greek diplomats to Australia and university professors.

The first day proceedings focused on Greek-speaking education, national issues and problems faced by young expatriates. Other issues discussed were promoting the Greek-Australian identity, communication between generations on Greek-Australian community issues and Greek expatriate youth networking in Australia and New Zealand.
