The participation of Yiannis Smaragdis’ film EL GRECO in the 33rd Toronto International Film Festival that ended on September 14, 2008 was a major success.
In the audience packed cinema theaters viewers enjoyed a great film that praises the Greek culture and spirit. The film’s director Yiannis Smaragdis and leading actors Nick Ashdon and Lakis Lazopoulos, actor Theo Zouboulidis, photography director Aris Stavrou and producer Eleni Smaragdi visited Toronto on the occasion of the Festival and the Exhibition.
The Exhibition was presented by Alexandros Film under the auspices of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) with the support of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) – SAE Canada Regional Coordinator Office, the PanMacedonian Federation in Ontario, the Greek Community of Toronto, the “Knosssos” Cretan Association of Toronto and the Greek translation service provider Integrated Consulting Services.
During the Exhibition, held at the famous Bata Museum on September 4-14, large numbers of visitors admired the exceptional recreations of different stages of the Domenikos Theotokopoulos’ works used in the film, all of them created by three young and talented painters, Savvas Georgiadis, Nikos Moschos and Stelios Petroulakis, the excellent costumes designed by award-winning costume designer Lala Huete as well as objects from the Workshop of Tiziano and the Workshop of Domenikos Theotokopoulos.
SAE Canada Regional Coordinator and President of the Greek Community of Toronto Costas Menegakis welcomed the film contributors present in a reception held in Bata Museum on September 11, 2008. After thanking Eleni Smaragdi for the successfully presented Exhibition he stated that SAE will continue to support the Greek artists and try to make their work known to the world as much as it can.
