Establishment of SAE Africa-Near/Middle East Youth Network

The proceedings for the establishment of a SAE Africa-Near/Middle East Youth Network, in accordance with Law No 3480/2006 on the youth regional networking, were completed with the election of a coordinator and the coordinating council members.

Thirty five young expatriates participated in the founding convention held in Pretoria, South Africa on August 14-16, representing the region’s Greek communities. Coordinator was elected National Association of Hellenic Youth and Student Organizations of South Africa (NAHYSOSA) Dimitris Vafiadis, while coordinating council members are: Alexandros Kafetzis and Anna Vardopoulou (NAHYSOSA), Alexandros Ninos (Old City of Jerusalem Greek Community), and Rita Kaki (Jordan Greek Youth Association). Substitute members are: Marilena Feloutzis (Greek Community in Cairo) and Anna-Maria Anastasiou (Greek Community in Damascus).

Participants decided to organize volunteer networks for the 2013 Mediterranean Games in Volos and Larisa, central Greece, and raise public awareness in their region as regards the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece. Within this framework, a number of lectures will be held featuring internationally renowned figures (e.g. Mandela’s lawyer and close friend George Bizos) in sites with strong symbolism for global culture such as, the Library of Alexandria.

Another initiative they are contemplating is the organizing of cultural tours in SAE Africa-Near/Middle East countries aimed at forging closer relations between the younger generation and local Greek expatriate communities, while offering the Greek expatriate youth the opportunity to rediscover the region’s history.

Among the issues discussed were also the hosting of young expatriates in Greece and ways to build closer relations the internet.(Source:ANA MPA)
