A visit programme that will bring the young expatriates in Africa closer to the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa is being launched by the SAE Africa-Near/Middle East Regional Council.
The decision that will allow young Greek expatriates to be familiar with the institution and history of the Patriarchate through informative guided tours was reached in a meeting held on January 14 between Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa and SAE Regional Coordinator for Africa-Near/Middle East Charis Gouvelis at the Patriarchal Vicarage of Cairo, the second seat in the hierarchy of the Church of Alexandria. Gouvelis serves as alternate president of SAE during the first half of 2008.
Patriarch Theodoros II congratulated Gouvelis for his new duties and thanked the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) for its support to the Patriarchate of Alexandria. They also announced the launch of cooperation between the Patriarchate and SAE’s “Desmos” NGO on issues concerning the Greeks in Africa.
On his part, the alternate president of SAE stressed that cooperation has always been close and issued a formal invitation to the Patriarch to attend the proceedings of the 2nd Regional Assembly of SAE Africa-Near/Middle East to take place in Alexandria, Egypt on October 10-14.
They also referred to the problems in Kenya after the recent civil war hostilities and decided to coordinate their efforts in support of the Greek community helping to solve any problems the Greek expatriates face as a result of the crisis in the country.
Gouvelis invited the Patriarch of Alexandria to attend events culminating in May on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Greek Community in Pretoria, South Africa.
The alternate president of SAE, who is departing for Athens today before returning to South Africa, met earlier at noon with Greek ambassador Ioannis Alexios Zepos, Greek Community of Cairo President Christos Kavalis and Secretary Nikolas Politis to discuss issues concerning the Greek community of the Egyptian capital.
