SAE President letter to PM Karamanlis


World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) President Stefanos Tamvakis called in a letter for the personal intervention of Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis requesting the speedy completion of all necessary procedures and the adoption of SAE’s position regarding the draft law on the “exercising of the Overseas Greeks right to vote in parliamentary elections”.

Expressing the views of the SAE Presiding Board and the seven Regional Coordinating Councils attending the 1st Joint Meeting in Thessaloniki on December 7-9, Tamvakis addressed the PM requesting the adoption of the law on the “Overseas Greeks right to vote in parliamentary elections”. Tamvakis referred to the announcement made by the PM on the issue speaking in SAE’s 6th World Convention held in Thessaloniki in December 2006 thus “meeting a long-standing request of World Hellenism”.

The SAE president also expressed in his letter the unanimous and firm position of the organization on the issue, namely:

1.The right to vote in parliamentary elections having the option of a postal vote or ballot-box.
2.Establish electoral districts of Overseas Greeks allowing the Greeks abroad to vote for their own candidates that will come from their ranks.

In conclusion, the SAE president wished the PM success in his work stating that it reflects on the country’s success.

The letter was also forwarded to Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos, Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis, and the presiding board members of the parliamentary Special Permanent Committee on Greeks Abroad, President Nikolaos Tsiartsionis, 1st Vice President Grigoris Niotis, 2nd Vice President Nikolaos Gatzis and Secretary Tasos Kourakis.
