Ivan Savvidis was born in the village of Santa in the Georgian Republic region of Tsalka on March 27, 1959 to a family of Greek workers. His father’s name is Ignatios.
After finishing the 7th grade, he moved to the Rostov region where he graduated from high school. In 1977, he joined the army. In 1980, after his military service, he was employed at the state-run tobacco industry at Don. He started out as a worker and was able to be promoted to the post of the factory’s deputy director.
In 1988, he graduated from the School of Economics, the Rostov State Economic University while, at the same time, keeping his post at the tobacco factory.
In 1993, he was voted general director in the Donskoy Tabak Inc. and held the post for ten years.
From 1998 until 2003 he served as a deputy in the Rostov region Legislative Assembly.
In December 2003, he was elected to the State Duma of the Russian Federation. Since March 2004 he is the vice-president of the Budget and Tax Committee and head of the Joint Parliamentary Cooperation Committee with the Hellenic Parliament.
Ivan Savvidis is also president of the SKA-Rostov FC and president of the region’s Billiard Association.
In 2004, he became the president of the Federation of Greek Associations in Russia.
Since 2006, he is SAE former Soviet Union countries Regional Coordinator.
In 1999, he was honored by the Russian Federation with the medal “For the contribution to the County”, 2nd degree and in 2003 he received the Medal of Honor. He has won commendations by the Russian President, the Patriarch of All Russia, the Rostov Prefect and the Rostov-na-Donu Mayor.
He is an economics lecturer and has published 10 scientific studies.
Ivan Savvidis is married to Kyriaki (her father’s name is Georgios) and have two sons, Giorgos and Nikos.
