The government sponsored draft law on the Overseas Greeks right to vote in national elections to be implemented in the parliamentary elections that will be held after Jan.1, 2011, as announced by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis in the 6th Convention of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), was at the center of the talks held yesterday between SAE President Stefanos Tamvakis, Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos, Deputy Foreign Minister Theodoros Kassimis and main opposition PASOK MP Evangelos Venizelos.

In the meeting with the interior minister an initial approach was made as to the way the election right of the Overseas Greeks will be exercised. The SAE president conveyed to Pavlopoulos the trend formed within Omogeneia following the draft law presentation and an agreement was reached to establish an ad hoc committee to cooperate with SAE and present the final proposals to the minister.

Tamvakis also met with Deputy Foreign Minister Theodoros Kassimis whom he briefed in detail while the Overseas Greeks vote was also the focal point of a meeting he had earlier with PASOK MP Evangelos Venizelos, handling the issue on behalf of the opposition.

SAE, exercising its consultative, advisory and assertive role, has brought the draft law issue to the members of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad. After recording all views through the Regional Coordinators and the Coordinating Councils, the SAE Presiding Board will convey the position of the Omogeneia to the Greek State in order to have a second round of talks before the draft law is brought to parliament for approval.
